OUR NEW BEGININGS

Hello All,

I am pleased to be back in the saddle again, talking about Tualatin Valley Gleaners and sharing all that has been happening and changing.
In the past year and a half, almost 2 years the TVG has gone through so much. We are a community that is built by its members, and when they struggle the TVG struggles. Many of our families faced challenges while the housing market has been going through major changes locally and abroad. Quite a few faced homelessness and extreme poverty for the first times in their lives. Jobs were lost and the new ones gained were insufficient in their living wages. I personally have never seen so many working families facing struggles with health care, shut off and eviction notices. TheTVG worked as hard as we could to prop each other up, share resources, and even house each other. In doing this however, TVG had to take a large step back when it came to applying for grants, attending outreach and recruitment of donors. WE survived however, and then when we found out we had to leave the Beaverton Resouce Center because they were tearing it down to build a new Beaverton Police Department it hit home. Not knowing where to turn, the Board of Directors discussed all options, but soon realized the one option that stood out was to shut down.

It wasn't until a gleaning harvest event where one of our families reached out and told us that they had been discussing the relocation and possible close down with their church, and the church was possibly interested in partnership.

WOW - a door opened!

We were very concerned with moving to a Christian church, because we did not want to lose our diverse population of wonderful members. We were afraid that many would not follow to our new location and be forced to find new food options.

Again, the community of the TVG surprised and delighted me. We relocated to Crossroads Church and as many as were able to come - did! We are expanding again, and getting ready to start a new journey with our great community of individuals and families that all have a common goal of helping others while helping their families too.

Thanks for reading,

Heather
